Characterisation – “The Book Thief”

Characterisation in “The Book Thief

What does the reader learn about each character in the opening sections of the text? I.e. Age, situation, personality, fears, desires, obstacles etc. What causes these characters to develop (or deteriorate) emotionally, mentally, physically or socially? I.e. Through events, conflicts, decisions, beliefs/values or external influences outside their control. Lastly, include what we as the reader ultimately learn from these character representations? Why do you believe Markus Zusak included them? What overriding purpose/s do they fulfill in the text?
